Parent - Child activities for children ages 0 - 4
Language is an important developmental milestone in a child's life. Children with normal hearing are exposed to language the second they are born. Language learning becomes an every-minute-of-every-day experience that gradually grows over time and results in skilled mastery of that spoken language. For a child who is deaf or hard-of hearing, learning language becomes a challenging process. Research has shown that the earlier language is presented to the child visually, the faster and easier language acquisition will occur.
The vast majority of parents who have a deaf or hard-of-hearing child are hearing. Most have no experience with deafness or hearing loss. Learning a visual language such as American Sign Language seems overwhelming and almost impossible to them. Having a teacher of the Deaf come to their home and work with them can be a huge benefit to both learning to sign and learning how to show language to their child visually throughout their daily routines and in their home environment.
Signs of Learning, LLC tutors can schedule simple activities in the family's own home at a time that is convenient for them. Activities are tailored to address the specific areas the parents are seeking help with. Siblings and other family members can also be included as desired.

Children in grades K - 6
Because Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing children access information visually with very little or unclear auditory assistance, students at this age may also experience delays in their overall language development. Tutors plan language activities to assist the student in their opportunities for exposure to a variety of language concepts and skills. Learning academic information can often occur at a slower pace than that of their hearing peers. One-on-one direct instruction is very helpful in assisting students in making academic gains in their areas of weakness. Common areas needing support are reading, writing, English grammar, spelling, and vocabulary development. Some students also have difficulty with Math, Science, and Social Studies concepts. Signs of Learning, LLC tutors can help in any of these areas.
Signs of Learning, LLC tutors are available to meet with the student's classroom teacher(s) in order to coordinate teaching techniques and strategies and discuss the student's preferred learning style. These collaborative meetings are scheduled with the permission of the parents and the school administration.
Students who are already on grade level can receive one-on-one enrichment opportunities to continue their learning pace and assist them in reaching their highest potential.
